This Earth Day, the focus shifts to the vital theme of "Planet vs. Plastics." At Onecom, our dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship is unwavering. As a company that truly values ESG principles, we are delighted to partner with like-minded organisations who share our commitment to making a positive impact.
In sync with this year's theme, we are excited to shine a light on our esteemed partner, Vodafone, and their latest initiative - The Great British Tech Appeal. This initiative not only supports critical environmental goals but also addresses the pressing issue of the digital divide, ensuring communities have access to essential digital technologies.
The Challenge at Hand - What is the digital divide?
The digital divide is a pressing concern that continues to impact communities worldwide. With over 1.7 million households in the UK lacking access to digital technology, the gap between the connected and the disconnected persists. For those affected, everyday tasks such as online learning and staying in touch become obstacles.
Looking at the digital divide in the context of electronic waste (or ‘e-waste’), a clear pattern emerges wherein usable devices are discarded that could be of use to others. According to The Global E-Waste Monitor 2020, the UK stands as the world's second-largest producer of e-waste per capita, generating a staggering 23.9 kg per person in 2019. This growing concern highlights the urgency for sustainable solutions that address the rising tide of electronic waste.
Vodafone's Solution: The Great British Tech Appeal
In a bid to bridge the digital divide while championing environmental stewardship, Vodafone has launched The Great British Tech Appeal. Through this innovative scheme, customers and businesses can donate their old mobiles to be refurbished and redistributed by Vodafone’s charity partners, the Good Things Foundation and Barnardo’s.
Every reusable device donated through this initiative finds a new home with someone in need, ensuring they receive not only the device but also six months of free data, calls, and texts with Vodafone. Any devices that cannot be reused are responsibly recycled, contributing to a circular economy and reducing e-waste.
